Industries and Commodities Covered

The seven industries organizing coverage, the commodities assessed within each, and how assessment locations are selected.

Which industries organize the coverage?

Seven fixed industries structure the entire program: Fertilizers & Gases, Olefins & Derivatives, Aromatics & Derivatives, Alcohols & Organic Acids, Polymers, Inorganic Chemicals, and Metals & Mining. Every commodity assessed belongs to exactly one of these industries, and each commodity in turn carries one or more price assessments across the locations covered for it — the industries → commodities → locations structure described in What the Data Covers.

The seven-industry set is a fixed design decision, while the commodity roster within each industry grows over time — 220+ commodities are assessed across the seven. The industry is also the subscription unit: subscribing to an industry grants access to every commodity assessment within it, as explained in How is coverage organized?.

Which commodities are covered in each industry?

Each industry spans many commodities — 220+ across the seven. The table below shows the four best-known commodities in each industry, and See more navigates to that industry's guide in the assessments catalog. The complete roster for every industry is available below, in one collapsible list divided by industry. Every commodity name links to its entry in the assessments catalog, where the individual assessments and their covered locations are listed; the catalog remains the authoritative, current reference for exactly what is assessed.

How are assessment locations selected?

For each commodity, the assessments presented are those recognized as most relevant for its international trade. In practice, location selection follows three criteria: how relevant the commodity is within its industry, which shapes how broadly it is covered; whether a location is a key producing or consuming market for the commodity; and whether reliable data is available there to sustain a rigorous monthly assessment — the same principle that governs geographic coverage across all Intratec solutions, described in Why analyze some countries only in aggregate?.

Because the coverage axis is the industry rather than a fixed country set, the covered locations differ from commodity to commodity: a commodity traded worldwide may be assessed across several world regions, while one with a concentrated market may be assessed in a single location. The geographic framework itself — regions, sub-regions, and countries — is shared with every other Intratec solution and defined in World Regions.
