Glossary: P-R

Definitions of Intratec methodology and product terms from P to R.

P

Percentile Band (P10, P50, P90)
Distribution anchors reported alongside a country's score in an Industry Economics & Competitiveness assessment: P10 marks the least-competitive tier, P50 the median (close to the global mean), and P90 the top-tier frontier.
Pillar
One dimension of competitiveness in the Industry Economics & Competitiveness program, scored 0–100.
Pillar Score
The aggregated, normalized 0–100 measure for one competitiveness dimension in the Industry Economics & Competitiveness program; updated monthly.
Plant Capacity Assessment
A Commodity Production Costs Premium-edition analysis that recalculates capital costs, operating costs, and product value across alternative plant capacities to show scale effects.
Plant Construction Cost Index (IC Index)
Intratec's country-specific index for tracking capital-cost escalation in manufacturing-plant construction; published as a Reference Dataset in Industry Economics & Competitiveness and used in Commodity Production Costs reports to scale capital costs across time periods.
Plant Cost
The capital cost related to construction of the industrial site itself in Commodity Production Costs reports, built from ISBL investment, process contingency, OSBL investment, and project contingency.
Plant Cost Breakdown Per Discipline
A Commodity Production Costs plant-cost view that rearranges plant construction cost into direct costs, indirect costs, and contingency, often showing components as percentages of bare equipment and total plant cost.
Plant Location Factor (IL Factor)
A monthly Reference Dataset in the Industry Economics & Competitiveness program, exclusive to it: dimensionless multipliers that convert a plant's capital cost from one country to another, with the report's target country as the 1.00 baseline. Factors for all benchmarked countries are published each month.
Point-In-Time Value
An indicator taken from the latest single reporting period rather than smoothed with a trailing average; in the Industry Economics & Competitiveness program the Domestic Tax Environment and Tariff Protection & Market Access pillars use point-in-time values because they reflect discrete policy settings.
Ports & Trade Logistics
A component of the Logistics & Infrastructure pillar in the Industry Economics & Competitiveness program, measuring maritime gateway capacity and a country's integration into global shipping lanes; excluded for landlocked countries, with its weight redistributed among the remaining components.
Preliminary (P)
Data status label for a model estimate used while official data is unavailable; in Intratec price assessments, preliminary prices are model-derived best estimates that bridge the 1-to-3-month lag of official statistics and are replaced by the consolidated value, labeled Final (Fi), once official figures arrive.Related terms: Final (Fi); Forecast (F); Preliminary-to-Final back-test.
Preliminary-To-Final Back-Test
The internal accuracy check that compares a Preliminary or Forecast price estimate with the later Final value that replaces or confirms it, feeding model recalibration when estimates drift from official data.
Price Forecast
A forward-looking Intratec price estimate for selected commodities, generated monthly from statistical and machine-learning models and extending about six months beyond the latest reported period.
Price History
The sequence of historical monthly price assessments available for a commodity series in Primary Commodity Prices, used to compare current values with prior market levels.
Price Series
A continuous set of monthly price assessments for the same commodity, location basis, specification, currency, and unit; a series can include historical Final values, recent Preliminary estimates, and forward Forecast values.
Primary Commodity Prices
The Intratec annual subscription program that delivers monthly independent price assessments, history, and selected forecasts for 220+ commodities worldwide, organized by industry and assessed across relevant locations.
Primary Energy Sources
Raw energy materials extracted from nature — such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas — or harnessed from renewable flows like solar and wind.
Process Contingency
A Commodity Production Costs capital-cost allowance for uncertainty in process definition, missing technical information, operating parameters, scaling assumptions, and off-the-shelf equipment assumptions.
Process Flow Diagram (PFD)
A detailed process diagram used in Premium Commodity Production Costs reports to show relevant operations, main process streams, equipment, and utilities.
Process Unit
The core ISBL area of an industrial site in Commodity Production Costs reports, organized into functional units and used as the technical basis for capital and operating cost estimation.
Product Value
The full economic cost indicator in Commodity Production Costs reports, combining operating costs, depreciation, corporate overhead, and expected ROCE; it is not the same as the actual market price of the product.
Production
The generation of energy from domestic sources — fossil fuels extracted through drilling or mining, nuclear power, renewables, and bioenergy from biomass and waste; a term of the Energy Prices & Markets energy balance.
Production Cost Datasheet
The consolidated Commodity Production Costs table that brings together plant assumptions, capital investment, raw-material and utility economics, operating costs, depreciation, corporate overhead, ROCE, and product value.
Productivity-Adjusted
A cost weighted by workforce output per worker in the Industry Economics & Competitiveness program, where the most efficient countries sit at the 1.0× baseline.
Project Contingency
A capital-cost allowance for project-development uncertainty, including incomplete specifications, labor-cost changes, weather, strikes, inflation, and other risks that can affect construction cost.
Project Implementation & Construction Schedule
A Premium-edition Commodity Production Costs schedule that outlines the preliminary path from investment decision to commercial production, typically covering basic engineering, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and start-up.

R

Rank
A country's position, from 1 (most competitive) to 33 (least), within the Industry Economics & Competitiveness benchmarking set of 33 countries.
Reference Dataset
An absolute-value dataset published by the Industry Economics & Competitiveness program alongside its 0–100 pillar scores, exclusive to it. Built from modeled cost inputs rather than lagged statistics, it carries no data gap and extends to a six-month forecast. Examples: Plant Construction Cost Index and Plant Location Factor.
Relative Performance Ratio
The ratio of the Intratec model's MAPA to the Constant Price (Naïve) model's MAPA for six-month-ahead forecasts; values above 100% indicate the Intratec model outperforms the no-change baseline.
Renewables
Energy sources that naturally replenish — solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass; they generate electricity with lower environmental impact than fossil fuels and contribute to sustainability.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
The expected return component used in Commodity Production Costs product-value calculations, translating capital investment into a per-unit cost element that varies by industry sector and technology maturity.
